If Charlie Chaplin says a day without laughter is a day wasted, the man is to be believed.
Scientifically speaking laughter triggers the release of hormones- endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals thus decreasing stress; increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, and so promoting body’s natural defense to diseases.
Laughter also improves heart function, In fact, even the American Heart Association recommends laughter for a healthy heart.
And hence make it no laughing matter, because despite of being it our innate response, we are seriously tight lipped and clenched jawed, while tucking back our body’s natural instinct.
When was the last time you raptured into carefree bouts of laughter-the hearty ones, the innocent joy of laughing.
It could be a part of our conditioning that we kill the humour to act mechanical when we can seriously humour our stress.
According to Gallup report, people laughed more on weekends than weekdays. Why? Is it because of the workdays, the office stress.
All of this serious business pushed to the origination of one dedicated day towards humour, laughter and a hefty good cheer.
In January of 1988, 12000 members of local and international laughter club gathered for a mass laughter session, the day then set the footprints for World Laughter day.
Every year on first Sunday the world laughter day is celebrated and then on this day the members of laughter clubs along with their friends and family on important landmarks and parks to celebrate the spirit of a good laugh.
Laughter day was organized by Dr. Madan Kataria, the same man who invented laughter yoga.
Laughter Yoga is already in practice in 100 countries, Google, BBC, Hewlett Packard and other organizations also vouch for it.
Laughter Yoga-What you need to know?
Laughter yoga uses the technique guided laughter sessions, because according to science the body cannot differentiate between real or fake laughter.
The laughter thus does not have to rely on any humour, jokes or a whimsy stand-up arrangement, instead it uses eye contact, playfulness and natural instincts because laughter is contagious.
The warming up breathing techniques and light-heartedness of the process supplies the oxygen to brain and body and thus relieving stress.
Humour in the workplace
Organizations like Google, Yahoo and IBM all have funny names for their conference rooms, one like Kajagoogoo, while Southwest airlines had the rapping flight attendant. Why? Because,
“There is little success where is little laughter” – Andrew Carnegie

Corporates have been giving importance to wit and humour in leadership lately, the appropriate humour has the capability of winning hearts thus also strengthening the executive presence.
According to Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of The Humour Advantage: Why Some Businesses are Laughing all the Way to the Bank (Dec. 2013), “Humour is one of the easiest and most effective way to manage workplace stress, build bridges and reduce conflict with people, create an atmosphere of trust and openness, spark creative solutions to day-to day challenge, improve communication, boost morale and foster productive and healthy workplaces”.
